Treating Swollen Ankles

A friend of mine was standing in li for a long time just to get information about DNA tests. The standing caused her ankles to get swollen and now she wanted to know what to do to treat it. Now swollen ankles though not always painful, can cause quite some discomfort.
If the reason for the swelling is a fracture or sprain, it would be extremely painful and you would need medical help. But the one caused by edema, that is fluid retention, can be treated at home. This is how to treat swollen ankles.
1. The simplest way of first aid for edema or swollen feet is to rest them on a level above your knees while sitting. You may rest the feet on a pillow or cushion if that is more comfortable. This will cause some of the fluids to flow back, and the swelling will subside. Applying a cold pack on the feet while resting can also help to reduce the swelling.
2. Another thing you can do is to exercise the ankles. Sit on the floor with your legs extended in front of you. Rotate each ankle in the clockwise direction 10 times. Then rotate them in an anti-clockwise direction the same number of times. This exercise also helps to reduce the swelling of ankles.
3. It is important to wear comfortable shoes or sandals. Edema usually settles in during long hours of air travel. It is advised to wear sandals with adjustable straps to overcome the discomfort of swollen ankles.
4. Wearing ankle wraps or ankle braces will help while walking, as they slightly compress the area and offer support to the ankles.
