Cleaning Chemicals - What’s the Alternative?
Over the last 30 years essential oils have increased in popularity and are now used in many aspects of our lives, especially in the beauty and massage therapy areas. However, because of their anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties many essential oils can be used very effectively in many applications, for example: cleaning surfaces etc; in the laundry wash to destroy mites and bed bugs; diluted in shampoo to destroy head lice; diluted in water in a spray to keep mosquitoes away, sterilise a pet’s area and bedding, or as a room freshener. Their uses seem endless!
Unlike the majority of cleaning chemicals many essential oils are non-toxic which makes them a favourable choice for people with certain health issues, such as asthma, or the ecologically conscious who don’t wish to put toxic cleaning chemicals into the environment (waste cleaning chemicals in water flushed from a boat into a river is just one example).
You can’t just use any oil for any old job - it’s important to get the facts on which ones to use, how they are applied, and in what quantity. Essential oils are highly concentrated and should never be used undiluted unless advised otherwise by a qualified person. Oils for potpourris or night light burners are rarely pure and should never be used. The Internet is a good source of information and there are excellent books out there written by qualified aromatherapists as well as nurses.
Traditional cleaning chemicals are still needed to help us guard our health but, with the extensive research that’s currently being undertaken into the properties of certain essential oils, we should see them being used far more widely in the future.
