Feel better without medication
Before I go any further, I should make it absolutely clear that I’m not advocating that people with serious mental health problems should ditch their pills in favor of non-medicinal treatments. However, if you suffer from mild depression and have learned to recognize the signs that suggest your own personal “Black Dog” is approaching, then there are a few steps you can take to try and ward him off and hopefully avoid another session on the anti-depressants. Most of these ideas can be practiced all the time, in an effort to ward off any potential problems – it’s amazing how effective these simple measures can be!

Diet is immensely important in maintaining good general and mental health; a balanced and nutritious diet will keep you feeling good and combined with a strenuous exercise programme to get rid of all that unwanted aggression has been proven to help improve mental health amongst people who have experienced bouts of depression. Taking care of the way you look is another way to make sure you feel your best. From simple measures to taking a long and relaxing bath after a tough day at work, to splashing out on a day at a spa to make you feel like a million dollars, spending a bit of time making a fuss over yourself or having someone make a fuss over you is an ideal way to start feeling more positive about your mental health. Stocking up on beauty supplies is just as important as stocking up on fresh fruit and vegetables...

Meditation, hypnotherapy, massage, long walks, even kick-boxing people with mild mental health problems have told me that all of those things have helped them at one time or another, either to help keep their depression away or to control it when the early symptoms have been identified. Of course, not all of these are going to work for you and it may take some time for you to find the key you need to help alleviate your own mental health problems. But it is worth spending some time and effort figuring out the natural methods that will work for you; a session in the boxing ring has got to be better than a few months on tablets after all!
